Type 181 Rear Brake Drum - IRS Models

This rear brake drum is designed specifically for Volkswagen Type 181 Trekkers fitted with IRS (Independent Rear Suspension). The Type 181 originally used swing axle rear suspension, but from March 1973 onwards (chassis number 183 2346 525) Volkswagen switched to IRS, requiring a different rear brake drum design. This drum is correct for those later IRS-equipped vehicles. The brake drum forms a critical part of the rear braking system. It mounts to the rear hub and rotates with the wheel, providing the friction surface that the brake shoes press against when the brake pedal is applied. As hydraulic pressure forces the brake shoes outward, they contact the inner surface of the drum, creating friction that slows and stops the vehicle. A true, round braking surface is essential for smooth braking, consistent pedal feel, and even shoe wear.Manufactured to original specifications, this drum features the early wide 5 stud pattern (5×205 PCD), allowing the continued use of original-style wheels while benefiting from the improved stability and handling of IRS suspension. It is an ideal replacement for worn, scored, or out-of-round drums that can cause vibration, reduced braking efficiency, or pulling under braking.Sold individually, although it is strongly recommended to replace rear brake drums in pairs to maintain balanced braking performance on both sides of the vehicle.Fitting Notes & Related PartsDesigned only for IRS rear suspension Type 181 models (not swing axle)Fits vehicles from March 1973 onwardsStud pattern: 5×205 PCDClean the braking surface with brake cleaner before installation, as drums are often supplied with a protective anti-corrosion coatingRecommended to inspect or replace at the same time:Rear brake shoesWheel cylindersBrake fitting kits and adjustersRear wheel bearings and seals (if wear or leaks are present)
